Mockup Review

    Background

The goal of the review is to inform classmates and instructors about the key challenges related to your team's three leading design concepts, and how these challenges will be resolved. The overall goal is to develop your concepts to a level that your team can confidently select their best product opportunity following the mockup review. If there are open issues this is a good opportunity to obtain input and suggestions before fully committing to detailed development. You will use feedback from this review to decide which final concept will be pursued by your team for the technical review. The experience will also help you learn how to present technical challenges and solutions in a design review. You can view examples of functional and visual mockups in the gallery (select a project and then click on the mockups link) and last year's mockups here.

      Requirements

The review is comprised of three components:
      1. a short (6 min total, 2 min/concept, structured presentation to the entire class (slides only);
      2. a less-structured demo and question-and-answer session in the Pappalardo lab (working with the mockups, a <1min demo of each mockup + 3-4 minute Q&A session for each mockup = total of 15 minute per each reviewer group). Each team will have 3 reviewer groups visiting their demonstration area, 2 15 minute break periods and 1 15 minute period during which the videos (part 3 will be filmed).
      3. a 2 minute, single take, video demonstration of each product mockup (filmed during one of the 15 minute slots in Pappalardo when the team does not have a reviewer group visiting.
Each team will present technical or visual mockups and drawings of their three concepts, focusing on illustrating the overall concepts, technical feasibility/operational principles of critical systems, preliminary product contracts, and user/product interaction. The presentation should focus on issues that are both potentially high-risk and critical to the concepts.

      Grading

The mockup review contributes to 15% of your grade. All course instructors will participate in the review process but your team instructors determine your grade. Key grading criteria are: 1. CONCEPT
      • thoughtfulness about, clarity, and vision for the design concept
      2. ANALYSIS
      • identification and resolution of critical issues/risks
      3. EXECUTION
      • realisation of mockups/models/simulations

Each team should also prepare and practice the following presentations:
      • structured presentation (part 1): Each team has 6 minutes to summarize the critical questions and findings for your three concepts (2 minutes per concept). Be sure to practice so that you can meet the time requirement! In this review, we will hard-stop at the time limit, so please make sure you or your teammates are not cut off.
Present a clear product vision/design concept, its critical risks, key findings, and remaining concerns. Please include a preliminary product contract with your key ~3-4 customer needs, product attributes, and specifications. Things to make very clear are: what is the product, who will use the product and why, who will buy it and why, and with what user group you will be testing. Physical models will not be part of this presentation. Each team should have one presentation file with the slides for the three concepts for that team in one file.
      • demonstration and user testing (part 2): Reviewer groups will rotate around to each team for ~15 minutes each (with built in time for rotations in between). Each team should be prepared to provide a quick (< 1 min) demonstration of how their mockup models work and have users test their mockup models. Focus on explaining what the mockup is and please don't do a repeat of the material presented in the structured presentation. Please have the preliminary product contract posters mounted and displayed in the demonstration area for context and reference, as needed. Q&A will follow (3-4 minutes per mockup). Reviewer groups will have ~ 15 minute sessions with each team, and each team will see 3 reviewer groups. Each team will have 2 “break” sessions of 15 minutes each.
      • mockup demonstration video (part 3): Each team should prepare a 2-minute demonstration/explanation of each concept using the mockup models. This demonstration should focus on your mockup models — it is not a repeat of the material presented in the structured presentation.
These demonstrations will be recorded by the 2.009 TAs during the review and will be posted on the mockup review pages along with the video of your structured presentation. This is a single-take video (we only have time to capture the demonstration once), so please plan and practice this hands-on demonstration so that you can explain your product and demonstrate your models efficiently in the 2-minute timeframe. The video will happen during a 15 minute block when there is no reviewer group visiting the team demonstration area.

      Special Demonstration Area Requests

Tuesday, October 18, 5 PM Requests for alternative demonstration area are due. Each team will have an assigned area to demonstrate their mockup models. Possible locations include the team areas in Pappalardo and nearby rooms and spaces. If your team needs to demonstrate in an area other than your team space (e.g., outside), please let the teaching staff know by 5 PM Tuesday.

      Submission of Concept Names

Wednesday, October 19, 11:59pm: Each team must submit the names of the product concepts in the order that they will be presented. The submitted names and order will be used to prepare the grading sheets. Please submit descriptive names (e.g., adjustable cane), not marketing names, as it helps the instructors and mentors remember what your concept is.

      PRODUCT CONTRACT SUBMISSION

By Wed. Oct 19th, 11:59pm: Please submit a pdf, png, or jpg of your preliminary product contract. If necessary, this may be more than 1 page (e.g., user persona on a different page/poster than specs). File preparation:
      • Files to be plotted and mounted should be sized 24"x36" (portrait or landscape is fine), and be at least 150dpi.
      • png, jpg, or pdf files are fine
      • Please name your files to be plotted as follows: team-idea.fileExt (e.g., Red-adjustableCane.png)
Jordan the TA will be plotting (printing on a gigantic 5' printer) and mounting these to foam core poster-board. If you see him, tell him his plotting job is fantastic and that the posters are beautiful. He will likely never read these instructions so it'll be a fun surprise.

      PRESENTATION UPLOAD AND TESTING

Thursday, October 20, 2:30-5:15 PM: Each team will sign up for a 15-minute presentation upload session. All presentations must be uploaded to the 2.009 presentation computer before the start of the mockup review. A representative from each team must load their presentation on the 2.009 presentation computer between 2:30 and 5:15 PM on Thursday and check that all media (e.g., fonts, movies, CAD animations) are working correctly. Each team should have a single file containing the materials for all three mockup concepts. You may use either Powerpoint or Keynote files for your presentations. If you prepare your materials using web-based presentation slides (e.g., Google Slides, Canva), please save it as a Powerpoint file and test that the exported file works correctly. We will not be able to use web-based slides for the actual review. Everything must work off-line. Please use the scheduling tool to schedule your team's presentation upload and testing time. At your scheduled time, please meet the TAs in the Pappalardo Lab. Please have the presentation on a computer ready to be transferred or on a cloud-based drive (e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive) that you know how to access. Please remember to bring any font files, if you are using special fonts. The team representative who attends this session should be familiar with the presentation and know how it is supposed to look. Once the slides are on the presentation computer and tested, you may not make changes to them. The current schedule for presentation uploading and testing is below:

      LAB AVAILABILITY

Thursday, October 20: Work in the Pappalardo Lab will stop at the usual 4:45 PM on Thursday, but you will have access to set up your team/demonstration area until 6:45 PM.

      DEMONSTRATION AREA PREPARATION

Thursday, October 20 until 6:45 PM: Each team is responsible for preparing their assigned demonstration area so that it is ready for the mockup review. STRUCTURED PRESENTATION PRESENTER TESTING

Thursday, October 20, 6:15-6:45 PM in 34-101: All presenters that will be presenting the structured presentation (Part 1) should stop by the presentation room and test their slides (make sure it looks ok and practice handling the slide remote). It is important that the actual presenters check the materials in the presentation room. Review Logistics The mockup review will start at 7:10 PM sharp in 34-101. The first part of the review takes place in the classroom. The second and third parts of the review take place in each team's assigned demonstration area (TBA).

      PART 1: STRUCTURED PRESENTATIONS (34-101)

Each team will have 6 minutes for their structured presentation. Physical models will not be part of this structured presentation, and there will be no questions after each presentation. All students (except those with conflicts) should plan on attending this first portion of the review, since seeing what the other teams are working on is an important part of the learning experience. Presentation order: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink

PART 2: DEMONSTRATION AND USER TESTING (Pappa and team areas)

      Mockup Presentation Tips

The communication instructors have prepared the following mockup presentation tips video. 00:17 tip #1: Script an informative, engaging opening 02:09 tip #2: Define customer needs and key product attrubutes 03:20 tip #3: Illustrate your product, models and tests 06:19 tip #4: Analyze key risks

      Mockup Demonstration Tips

Below are some tips from the communications instructors for how to handle Part 2, the demonstration and user testing.
      • All reviewers will have seen the presentation, so jump right into your model: simply tell them what they're looking at, what they can touch, and then let them explore and ask questions.
      • You can also ask questions to the reviewers.
      • 1 or 2 teammates can facilitate the Q&A.
      • 1 or 2 teammates can be designated note-takers to capture questions, feedback, and observations in real-time (each visit goes by fast!).
      • It can be helpful to have a poster of your product contract displayed on an easel near the model.
      • For those who are particularly averse to presenting in a big lecture hall, the interactive Q&A sessions would be a terrific opportunity for you to communicate in a less intimidating context.
